President's Message

July 1, 2010

During dinner in Nashville at the recent annual Educational / Development Forum I was discussing with a fellow NTREA member some of the more interesting challenges at work and Ken said "You know, this is really a pretty cool job." I nodded in agreement and thought about how after doing this trust real estate thing for over 20 years, I was still enjoying my job. And it occurred to me once again how fortunate we are to be able to have the opportunity to share our experiences at this event, which is organized by NTREA every year. I've been to 11 of them over the past 14 years, from Ft. Lauderdale to Seattle, and all of them have been interesting, educational, and fun.

My boss and I think there isn't a job in the Bank that we would want other than the one we have, and I'll bet a lot of our members agree. While probably no two of our members came to their trust real estate positions in the same way, I imagine few, if any, would want to work somewhere else. After all, the work is interesting and there are new challenges almost every day. You probably have the freedom you need to handle your properties in your own style within the parameters set out in your policies and procedures and you probably enjoy the constant problem solving that is required as you deal with a wide variety of properties under an equally wide variety of circumstances.

Managing assets, like real estate and natural resources, is not for everyone. By their nature, they present risks to the bank, and what better way is there to manage that risk than providing training to those who manage these assets. I believe that is where NTREA serves a vital role to the industry. Through our annual Educational/Development Forum, website, and other programs, our members keep up with the latest developments in subjects that help them perform their jobs at a high level.

For those of you who are members of NTREA, I encourage you to actively participate in and
utilize the events and resources provided by NTREA. If you qualify for membership but have not
yet become a member, I encourage you to make application now so you can start to benefit
from all NTREA has to offer.

I have the honor of being both the president of NTREA and host of the upcoming Forum to be
held in Tampa in May 2011. While this will be a challenge for me personally, with the help of
our talented and committed Board, Executive Director and general membership I'm confident
this will be a year that NTREA continues to improve and provide great benefits to its members
and the institutions they work for.

Sincerely,

Jay Bowman
